What is a refractive error, due to which one must wear glasses?
The cornea is a clear membrane that covers the front of the eye. This is where light rays enter the eye. After the cornea, they also pass through the eye lens and then are focused onto the retina. If a blurred image is generated in that are, it may be due to the fact that the cornea or the lens does not refract light correctly. This is called a refractive error.
Laser treatment of myopia (nearsightedness)
In the case of myopia (nearsightedness) light rays entering the eye through the cornea become focused at a point in front of the retina. That is why you see distant objects blurred. Laser eye surgery changes the refractive properties of the cornea in such a way that light rays will focus directly on the retina.
Laser treatment of hyperopia (farsightedness)
In the case of hyperopia (farsightedness), light rays entering the eye through the cornea focus at a point behind the retina, therefore the vision starts to become blurred up close, then later, at an older age, even distant objects become blurred. Laser eye surgery changes the refractive properties of the cornea in such a way that light rays will focus directly on the retina.
Laser treatment of astigmatism
Cylinders indicate the lens power added to correct astigmatism. In this case, the refractive error arises from the fact that the eye has different focal points in different planes. Laser light changes the cornea’s refractive properties in such a way that light rays will focus directly on the retina.
Laser treatment of presbyopia (need for reading glasses)
With ageing, similarly to other tissues, the eye lens gradually loses its elasticity. Therefore, patients are first unable to read small prints and later on even bigger prints without reading glasses. Laser eye surgery performed to help patients get rid of their reading glasses will change the cornea’s refractive properties so that light rays will focus directly on the retina both when focusing on near and distant objects.
